Quarry Farmers & Ranchers Market

I'm still flying. Not actually in an airplane, but still reveling in the success of Sunday's grand opening celebration of the Quarry Farmers & Ranchers Market.

We had thousands of people join us for the event and even had two baby goats and a few chickens that stole the show!

There were lots of families and people with dogs having fun. Three television stations covered the festivities and it seemed like everyone was taking pictures to capture special moments. KENS-TV photographer Martha Cerna did an amazing job of preserving these moments for us. Click here to view her slideshow of 106 pictures.

There were 20 vendors offering exquisite produce, grass-fed meats and handcrafted food that quickly filled customers' reusable bags.

Sergio Leal entertained us all morning with his outstanding guitar skills. The Dinner Garden showed the kids how to plant a seed which they then got to take home and watch grow.

Gerry Shudde of Shudde Ranch gave a very informative lecture on the health benefits of grass-fed beef. Concurrently, Fresh Horizons Catering was grilling grass-fed meats so everyone could taste the difference.

And at 10:30 am, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro arrived with his family to help us inaugurate the city's newest farmers market with a Watermelon Cutting Ceremony. That's right!

Orange Blossom Farms made their debut at the market with amazingly sweet and juicy organic watermelons, cantaloupes and honeydews.

After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed sampling the watermelon.

Before I knew it, the day was over and it was a success by all measurements. If you were able to join us, thank you and if you weren't part of the day's celebration, we do hope you will stop by one Sunday and load up on the best locally-grown produce, humanely raised meats and handcrafted food in South Texas.

Meet the farmers and get to know where your food comes from. I think local tastes better than food that has traveled thousands of miles to get to you.
